Intern Stories: Evan, 2026 Engineering Intern

Evan is spending his summer as a quality engineering intern at Janicki. He is a mechanical engineering student with one semester left at Washington State University, and this is his first internship in aerospace.

On the quality engineering team, Evan splits his time between the production floor and the office. He values his work and the people around him. His days start early, with time to review email and messages before moving into project work, and he keeps a light meeting load that includes training sessions where he observes and learns.

His main project is a solo effort to build an automated cure review tool that checks oven cure data against customer specifications. When inspections come up on the floor, he shadows them. The role mixes independent ownership with team support and a good deal of self-directed research.

The most technically interesting challenge so far has involved cure analysis, where heat does not distribute evenly across a part. Choosing where to measure, and when, takes careful thought to gather meaningful data.

Evan’s first impressions were strong. He gets along well with his team, shares common interests with them, and has been invited to activities outside of work. The culture feels genuine and easy to step into.

In his free time, Evan trains for marathons. He is working toward running all seven World Marathon Majors, and he has set a longer-term goal of hitting the Olympic qualifying standard in his early 30s. The training reflects the same mindset he brings to work: set a clear target, put in steady effort, and keep moving toward it.

His advice for future applicants is to build something tangible before the interview. This is not a grade-based job, he says. Creativity and hands-on experience matter more than GPA, so bring something to the table. He described the work as advanced arts and crafts, and said that mindset fits well here.

When asked to describe Janicki in three words, he chose cultured, creative and curious.
