Employee Stories: Thomas, NDI Technician

Thomas grew up in Anacortes, Washington, where he spent much of his time on the water racing sailboats. He was first introduced to Janicki through that world, learning the company had built the molds for several America’s Cup boats. That connection left a lasting impression. “I wanted to potentially go into a role that involved building boats,” he says.

Away from the water, Thomas discovered a love for cooking. His journey in the restaurant industry started at just eight years old, working in his parents’ Anacortes-based business, The Best Little Restaurant in Town. He began as a dishwasher and moved into the kitchen by age 15. After graduating high school, he joined the industry full-time. While he appreciated the creativity and fast-paced environment, the long hours and ongoing pressure eventually took a toll.

Choosing a New Course

Looking for something new, Thomas reconnected with a friend serving in the Navy. Inspired by their conversation, he enlisted. He began his military career as an undesignated fireman and later qualified as a rescue swimmer. Eager to expand his skills, he attended Aviation Electronic Technician school, completed the Navy’s cook test and transitioned into the reserves. There he served as air crew and loadmaster on DC-9 aircraft based at NAS Whidbey Island.

That combination of culinary and aircrew training opened the door to a unique assignment. Thomas was recalled to active duty and stationed in Sicily, where he served as a personal chef and flight attendant for a Navy Admiral aboard a Gulfstream private jet. The 18-month assignment allowed him to merge both passions while living and working overseas. Over his career, Thomas completed about five years of active duty and sixteen years in the reserves, including several additional recalls.

After the Navy, Thomas worked in a variety of roles, including sales, before finding a new direction in engineering. He used his GI Bill to enroll in the composites engineering program at Bellingham Technical College. During a school tour of Janicki, he learned they were hiring and decided to apply.

Life at Janicki

He joined Janicki in 2018 as a part-time mill technician while finishing his degree. Working on the floor sparked an interest in Non-Destructive Inspection (NDI), and after graduating, he was hired full-time as an NDI trainee. With Janicki’s support, Thomas completed 600 hours of on-the-job training and was sent to certification school for 40 hours of classroom time to earn his Level I certification. Janicki then sponsored an additional 40 hours of classroom instruction and testing, enabling him to earn his Level I certification in 2020 after another 200 hours of hands-on training.

Today, Thomas is Janicki’s most senior Level II technician and is certified in A-scan, C-scan and phased array inspection. He’s known as the go-to resource for complex inspection work.

Work-Life on the Weekend Shift

“I like that I’m not doing the same thing all the time. I get to work on all kinds of different parts,” he says. “There’s lots of opportunities for NDI roles, both at Janicki and beyond. It was a great career move for me.”

He currently works weekend shifts in Building 9, serving as the phased array inspection expert. With three 12-hour shifts totaling 36 hours, he receives full-time pay while enjoying four days off each week. The schedule gives him time to hike, camp and enjoy the outdoors during the week, avoiding the crowds.

“I love working weekends, it’s like being semi-retired,” he says.

Creativity After Hours

One of Thomas’s passions is night landscape photography, using a technique called light painting. This involves long-exposure shots where a light source is moved during the exposure to illuminate key elements of the scene. The result is a striking, creative blend of natural beauty and artistic lighting. Some of his landscape photography will soon be displayed in Janicki facilities.

From inspecting advanced aerospace parts to creating dramatic night landscapes, Thomas continues to build a life centered around curiosity, hands-on learning and personal passion.

During her internship, Jordyn’s day-to-day work varies but primarily involves working on aircraft panels. She assists with drilling, sanding and other hands-on tasks. Jordyn values the collaborative environment at Janicki, noting that everyone she works with shares the same goals, which helps her stay grounded and purposeful in her work.

One of her favorite aspects of the internship has been the encouragement from her mentor to explore different buildings and projects. That support has given her the freedom to expand her understanding beyond her immediate responsibilities.

What she appreciates most about her current role is that it keeps her active and physically engaged while offering continuous learning. Working on the production floor has given her direct insight into the practical side of engineering, reinforcing what she has learned in the classroom

One of the biggest surprises for Jordyn has been the shift from the theoretical nature of academic work to the fast-paced, hands-on demands of the industry. While she can recognize some parallels between school and work, she said that applying skills in real time is a completely different experience and learning process.

Her advice for future interns:

“Ask questions. Lean into the role of an intern and learn as much as you can.”

Employee Stories: Tony, Production Technician, Juan, Facilities Maintenance Lead, and Karissa, Production Technician

Leading By Example

As a family-owned company, Janicki is a place where opportunities often extend across generations. For Tony and his two children, Juan and Karissa, working here has become a family affair, with each building their own careers in different parts of the company.

Tony sands aluminum core

Tony joined Janicki in 2010, starting in mold fabrication and working across a variety of production roles at several locations in Washington. With 15 years of manufacturing experience, he has contributed to many of the company’s key projects and continues to bring dedication and expertise to every role.

Among Tony’s favorite projects was laying up, infusing, and assembling the composite green roof on Building 9. Most recently, he transitioned to the core team, preparing and sanding core materials for aerospace parts. Now he walks by and admires his work each day.

Tony’s dedication didn’t go unnoticed at home. His children, Juan and Karissa, have since joined him at Janicki. “Our dad was always pushing us to come work here,” Juan said.

“I like working here, it’s a good company. That’s why I’ve got my kids working here,” Tony said.

Rising Through The Ranks

Juan was the first of Tony’s children to join the company. After graduating from high school in 2018, he took his dad’s advice and applied for a role at Janicki. He began on the swing shift at Highway 20, sweeping floors and cleaning the shops.

Juan standing on concrete block with saw and coworker on the groundHe then joined the maintenance crew on the day shift, where he learned HVAC before transferring to Hamilton. Over time, he worked through a variety of facilities maintenance roles and was recently promoted to lead, now overseeing all maintenance crews in Hamilton.

One of Juan’s favorite projects was helping build a bridge over Muddy Creek to support the construction of Building 12. With a tight deadline looming, Juan spent a weekend building the bridge alongside company president John Janicki.

“John was out there with his hard hat on, swinging a hammer, it was really cool working with the big boss,” Juan said.

A Fresh Start

The family’s newest addition, Karissa, joined Janicki in April. With a background in fast food and customer service, making a career change was a big step.

“I was getting out of my comfort zone applying here. I wasn’t sure what I could do career-wise at Janicki, but I showed up to a Hiring Fair, got the job and have enjoyed it ever since,” Karissa said.

Karissa lays up a composite part

She now works in the Building 9 Controlled Contamination Area (CCA), laying up aerospace parts in a fast-paced, constantly evolving environment.

“The parts I work on, they’re exciting to make and there’s always something new each day,” she said.

A Family Legacy

Although Karissa and Juan are paving their own paths, they are often reminded of their dad’s long legacy.

“Everyone knows me as Tony’s daughter,” Karissa said.

“A lot of people accidentally call me my dad’s name,” Juan said.

Reflecting on his career and the advice he’s given his children, Tony said,

“I told them to stay focused and do your work, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes. I’m so proud of my kids.”

Karissa and Tony commute together, and every Wednesday, Juan joins the family for dinner, enjoying home-cooked meals from their mom. Outside of work, Juan, Karissa and Tony spend time together and with their friends.

This Father’s Day, we celebrate Tony and the legacy he’s building at Janicki, both in his career and with his family.
